India lives in its villages, yet for the longest time, rural India remained almost invisible on the internet. In 2014, we launched VillageInfo.in to change that. Since then, it has become a comprehensive source of information about Indian villages, helping people discover villages and understand their place within India's administrative structure.

More than 6.6 lakh villages form the backbone of India. Yet for years, searching online for a small village often returned little or no useful information. While the relevant data existed in public government records, it was organised primarily for administrative purposes rather than public reference. Looking up a single village often required knowing its district, tehsil or block beforehand, making it nearly impossible to find the right information unless you already knew where to begin.

Why VillageInfo.in?

VillageInfo.in was built to bridge this gap in accessibility, starting with the needs of village residents. For people living in rural India, knowing which gram panchayat, sub-district or postal division governs their village is essential for official paperwork, government services and civic representation. Access to these basic administrative details should be simple and intuitive, without requiring users to navigate multiple government sources.

Beyond serving local communities, an organised directory of rural India fulfils a broader public need. Students and researchers rely on structured baseline data for field studies, journalists use it to verify locations, and members of the Indian diaspora use the platform to reconnect with their native villages and family roots.

Since these records have traditionally been maintained separately, assembling a complete picture of a single village often required cross-referencing multiple sources.

We brought these scattered records together into a unified, searchable directory. Starting with the name of a village, visitors can view its complete administrative hierarchy on a single page, making publicly available geographical and administrative information easier to access and understand.
