Pune

Pune is a district in the Maharashtra State of India. Total area of Pune is 15,643 km² including 14,826.80 km² rural area and 816.20 km² urban area. As per 2011 stats, Pune has a population of 94,29,408 peoples, out of which urban population is 57,51,182 while rural population is 36,78,226. Pune has a sex ratio of approximately 914 females for every 1,000 males. The district has a population density of 602.8 inhabitants per square kilometre. There are about 21,51,503 houses in the district, including 13,71,531 urban houses and 7,79,972 rural houses. When it comes to villages, there are about 1,852 villages in pune district.

The Pune district is further divided in to Tehsils / Blocks / PS / Community Development Blocks (C.D.Blocks) for administrative purposes. In India, the Block or C.D.Block is often the next level of administrative division after the tehsil. It is important to note that, In some states of India C.D.Blocks are equal to tehsils.

For those who don't know, the C.D.Block is a rural area earmarked for administration and development in India. The area is administered by a BDO (Block Development Officer). A C.D.Block covers several gram panchayats, local administrative unit at the village level.

Shirur is the largest tehsil in pune district covering area of 1560.26 km² while Pune City is the smallest tehsil in pune district covering area of 286.42 km². Pune City is the most populous whereas Velhe is the least populous tehsil in pune district. There are 14 tehsils in Pune district.
