Assam

Assam is a state located in the north-eastern region of India. It was established on 26-Jan-1950. The capital of the state is Dispur. Guwahati is the largest city. The official languages are Assamese, Boro. Additional official languages include Bengali, Meitei. Major rivers of Assam include Brahmaputra, Barak, Subansiri, Manas.

As per Census 2011, Assam has a total geographical area of 78,438 square kilometres, including 77,178 square kilometres of rural area and 1,260 square kilometres of urban area.

The state has a unicameral legislature with 14 Lok Sabha seats, 7 Rajya Sabha seats, 126 Vidhan Sabha seats. Judicial matters are handled by the Gauhati High Court. Assam shares borders with Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, West Bengal, Mizoram, Tripura, and has an international border with Bhutan, Bangladesh.

Population of Assam
